LOCATION

The residency house is located in Centro Habana, the most densely populated area of Havana, immersing artists in the city's lively atmosphere. This central location offers easy access to a vibrant selection of restaurants, bars, cafes, businesses, and shops. Positioned along the iconic Malecón, Havana’s renowned boardwalk, artists will enjoy a unique blend of historical and modern elements.

Centro Habana, known as the "city outside the walls" (ciudad de extramuros), represents a new chapter in Havana’s evolution. It stretches from the Malecón in the north to the Hotel Nacional in the Vedado district. Despite its small size of under 5 square kilometers, Centro Habana is teeming with life and numerous attractions.

Artists can delve into the local culture, interacting with "Habaneros" as they navigate their daily routines. The area boasts significant sculptures, monuments, and architectural masterpieces like the Capitolio, home to the Academy of Science of Cuba and the National Library of Science and Technology. Renowned for its breathtaking architectural design, the Capitolio is regarded as one of the most beautiful palaces globally.

Centro Habana also features the vibrant "Barrio Chino" (Chinatown), situated between "Amistad" and "Dragones" streets. Established by Chinese immigrants in the 19th century, this area retains its authentic charm with excellent restaurants, Chinese societies, and a local Chinese newspaper.

Another highlight is the Grand Theater of Havana, an architectural gem that opened in 1838 and has become one of the world's leading opera houses. Its magnificent facade, crafted by Italian designer Giuseppe Moretti, includes sculptures symbolizing Charity, Education, Music, and Theatre. The theater continues to showcase performances by the "Ballet Nacional de Cuba" and other distinguished artists and companies.

Centro Habana provides artists with a unique chance to engage with the local community and explore a rich array of cultural and historical sites. The district offers an authentic, non-touristic experience, reflecting the true essence of Cuban daily life. It symbolizes the city's expansion beyond its colonial roots, embodying the republican Havana after 1900. This dynamic setting is ideal for artists seeking inspiration from Havana's genuine character.
